Privacy Policy
Last updated: 2 September 2026
SETL is built privacy-first. We designed it so your most personal information — when you sleep and how you use your phone — stays on your phone. This policy explains, in plain language, exactly what we collect, what we do not, and the choices you have.
The short version. The SETL app has no accounts and no servers. What you set up in the app (your name, sleep schedule, chosen apps and preferences) is stored on your device and is not sent to us. Your Screen Time data never leaves your phone. The only information we receive is the email address you choose to give us on our waitlist, and, if you subscribe, the limited sales information Apple shares with every developer.
1. Who we are and how to contact us
SETL ("SETL", "we", "us", "our") is a sleep-accountability app operated by Jacob Redshaw, based in England, United Kingdom. For UK and EU data protection law, we are the data controller for the information described in this policy.
For any question, request, or complaint about privacy, contact jacob.redshaw13@gmail.com. We answer within the time the law requires, and usually much sooner.
2. What this policy covers
This policy applies to the SETL website at setlsleep.com, including our waitlist, and to the SETL app for iPhone, including any version distributed for beta testing through Apple's TestFlight. It does not cover third-party services you reach from our site or app, each of which has its own policy.
3. Information we collect
3.1 Our website and waitlist
- Email address — only if you submit it to join our waitlist. We use it to tell you when SETL is available and to send occasional updates about the launch.
- Which part of the page you signed up from — recorded alongside your email so we can understand which sections of the site are useful. It says nothing about you personally.
- Standard technical data — like any website, our host may log ordinary request information such as your IP address, browser type and the time of your visit, in order to serve pages and keep the site secure.
- Fonts — our pages load typefaces from Google Fonts and Fontshare, which means those providers may receive your IP address when the fonts are requested.
Our website uses no advertising pixels, no third-party analytics, and no non-essential cookies.
3.2 The SETL app
When you set SETL up you provide information such as your name, your wake and bed times, the apps you want to rest at night, your time zone, and your appearance preferences. This is stored locally on your device and is not transmitted to us. SETL has no account system and no backend server that could receive it.
- Notifications — SETL's reminders are scheduled and delivered locally by your device. They do not require, and do not use, a push server.
- No analytics or advertising — the app contains no advertising SDKs, no third-party analytics, and no cross-app or cross-site tracking.
3.3 Screen Time data
SETL uses Apple's Family Controls, Managed Settings and Device Activity frameworks to block apps at bedtime and to nudge you if you are still on your phone. These frameworks are built by Apple specifically so that apps like ours can do this without seeing your activity.
- When you choose which apps to block, Apple hands SETL opaque tokens. A token stands for an app but does not tell us which app it is. We genuinely do not know what you selected.
- Device Activity monitoring runs on your device, inside Apple's system. Your usage is evaluated locally and the results are not reported to us.
- We cannot see your browsing, your messages, your notifications, your installed apps, or the content of anything you do on your phone.
Access to these frameworks requires an entitlement granted by Apple, and Apple reviews how an app handles this data before granting it.
3.4 Subscriptions and payments
SETL is free to download. Some features are, or may in future be, offered through a paid subscription.
- All purchases are handled by Apple through the App Store using in-app purchase. We never see or receive your card details, billing address, or Apple Account credentials.
- Apple confirms to the app that a subscription is active. Apple also provides developers with aggregated and anonymised sales and subscription reporting, which does not identify individual customers.
- Subscriptions renew automatically until cancelled. You manage, cancel, or change a subscription in your Apple Account settings, not in SETL.
- Refunds are issued by Apple under Apple's terms. We cannot process a refund on Apple's behalf, though we are glad to help you raise one.
3.5 Beta testing through TestFlight
If you take part in a SETL beta through Apple's TestFlight, Apple collects and passes to us information about your testing. This can include your name and email address, crash logs, usage information about the beta, device and operating system details, and any feedback or screenshots you choose to send.
We use this only to find and fix problems and improve the app. Under Apple's TestFlight terms we are not permitted to share it with anyone else, and we do not. TestFlight is also governed by Apple's own privacy terms, which you accept with Apple when you join a beta.
3.6 What we never collect
- We do not collect your contacts, photos, location history, messages, calls, or browsing history.
- We do not track you across other apps or websites, and we do not use advertising identifiers.
- We do not read from or write to Apple Health, and SETL does not use HealthKit.
- We do not build advertising profiles, and we do not sell or share personal information for behavioural advertising.
4. How we use information
- To run the app's features on your device: protecting your sleep window, blocking and unblocking apps, delivering your reminders and your Lock Screen widget.
- To contact you about the waitlist and launch, if you gave us your email.
- To provide and manage subscriptions, through Apple.
- To fix bugs and improve the app, including from beta feedback.
- To keep our website and services secure and working correctly, and to comply with our legal obligations.
We do not sell your personal information, we do not use it for third-party advertising, and we do not use it to make automated decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects about you.
5. Legal bases (UK GDPR and EU GDPR)
Where UK or EU data protection law applies, we rely on:
- Consent — when you give us your email for the waitlist, and when you send us beta feedback. You may withdraw consent at any time.
- Performance of a contract — to provide a subscription you have bought and the features it unlocks.
- Legitimate interests — to keep our website secure, to fix faults, and to improve SETL, where this does not override your rights and freedoms.
- Legal obligation — where we must keep records, for example for tax purposes on sales made through Apple.
6. Who we share information with
We keep sharing to the minimum needed to run SETL. We do not sell personal information to anyone.
- Google — waitlist emails submitted on our site are stored in Google Sheets via Google Apps Script. Google acts as our processor.
- Google Fonts and Fontshare — supply the typefaces on our site and may receive your IP address when a page loads.
- Apple — provides the App Store, the Screen Time frameworks, TestFlight, and all payment processing for subscriptions.
- Our website host — serves the site and may keep standard security logs.
Where we share personal data with a third party, we require that they protect it to a standard at least equal to the protection described in this policy and required by applicable law, and that they use it only for the purposes we specify. We do not permit them to use it for their own unrelated purposes.
We may also disclose information where we are legally required to, or where it is necessary to establish or defend legal claims or to protect the rights, safety and security of SETL and the people who use it. If SETL is ever sold or reorganised, information may transfer to the new owner, who would remain bound by this policy until you are told otherwise.
7. International transfers
Some of our providers, including Google and Apple, are based in or process data in the United States and other countries. Where information leaves the UK or the EEA, it is protected by an appropriate safeguard, such as UK or EU standard contractual clauses or an adequacy decision. You can ask us for details of the safeguard that applies.
8. How long we keep information
- Waitlist emails — until you ask us to remove you, or until the launch campaign ends and they are no longer needed, whichever comes first.
- Beta testing data — until the relevant beta is finished and the issues raised in it are resolved, after which we delete it.
- Website security logs — kept by our host for a short period in the ordinary course of operating the site.
- Subscription and tax records — kept for as long as tax and accounting law requires.
- Everything you enter in the app — lives on your device, for as long as you keep the app installed. We hold no copy.
9. Deleting your information and withdrawing consent
Because SETL has no accounts and no servers, the great majority of your information is not ours to delete: deleting the app removes it from your device, and once it is gone we have nothing to hold.
For the information we do hold:
- Waitlist email — email us and we will remove it, with no questions and no delay beyond what is practical. Every message we send you will also carry an unsubscribe option.
- Beta feedback — email us and we will delete it.
- Withdrawing consent — you may withdraw consent at any time by emailing us. Withdrawing consent does not affect anything done before you withdrew it.
SETL does not currently offer account creation. If we introduce accounts in future, we will provide a way to delete your account and its data from within the app.
10. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access the personal information we hold about you, to have it corrected, to have it deleted, to receive a copy in a portable format, to object to or restrict how we use it, and to withdraw consent. To exercise any of these, email jacob.redshaw13@gmail.com. We will not charge you or treat you differently for asking.
If you are in the UK you may complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk. If you are in the EU you may complain to your local supervisory authority. We would appreciate the chance to put things right first.
11. United States privacy rights
If you live in California, or in another US state with comprehensive privacy legislation, you may have the right to know what personal information we collect and why, to request deletion or correction, to receive a copy, and to appeal a refusal.
We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising, as those terms are defined under California law. We do not use or disclose sensitive personal information for purposes that would give rise to a right to limit. We will not discriminate against you for exercising any privacy right. To make a request, email us at the address above.
12. Children
SETL is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has given us information, contact us and we will delete it promptly. Where local law sets a higher age of consent for data processing, we apply that higher age.
13. Sleep and health information
SETL asks for the times you intend to sleep and wake. We treat these as personal information and keep them on your device. SETL is not a medical device, does not diagnose or treat any condition, and does not provide medical advice. It does not read from or write to Apple Health.
14. Security
Because the app keeps your setup on your device rather than on our servers, there is no central store of your sleep and usage data for anyone to breach. That is a deliberate design decision, not an accident of scale. For the little we do hold, we use reputable providers, limit who can reach it, and keep access to what is necessary. No method of storage or transmission is ever completely secure, but we take this seriously and will tell you and the relevant regulator if a breach ever affects you and the law requires it.
15. Cookies and local storage
Our website sets no advertising or analytics cookies. Your browser may store small amounts of data locally in the ordinary course of loading the page. The app stores your settings on your device using Apple's standard mechanisms.
16. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as SETL grows — for example if we add accounts, subscriptions, or new features. When we do, we will change the "Last updated" date above. For significant changes we will make it clear on our website, and where the law requires it we will ask for your consent again.
